7 personal details people reveal without noticing

People often reveal their full birthday, school or workplace, daily routine, travel plans, ID or ticket barcodes, pet and family names, and screens showing private messages. Alone each seems harmless, but together they can help scammers guess passwords, answer security questions or find you.

Why small details add up

One detail rarely causes harm by itself. The risk comes when someone collects several across your videos, bio and other profiles and pieces them together.

Scammers use this to guess passwords, answer account recovery questions or make a fake message feel convincing. Stalkers use it to work out where you will be.

1 and 2: Birthday and school or workplace

Your full date of birth is often used to verify identity, so a birthday video with the date and year is worth a second thought. Celebrating without showing the full date works just as well.

Uniforms, lanyards, ID badges and office signs can show exactly where you spend your weekdays. Crop or blur them before posting.

3 and 4: Routine and travel plans

Regular "day in my life" videos can show what time you leave home, which bus you take and where you go to the gym. Mixing up the order or posting later makes the pattern harder to follow.

Announcing that you are away for two weeks can also tell people your home is empty. Many people share holiday clips after they return.

5 and 6: Tickets, IDs and family names

Boarding passes, concert tickets and ID cards often carry barcodes or numbers that contain personal or booking details. Never post them unblurred, even for a moment.

Pet names, a mother's maiden name or a first school are classic security question answers. If they appear in your content, choose different answers for your security questions or use a password manager to store made-up ones.

7: What is on your screen

Screen recordings and shots of your laptop can capture notifications, email addresses, private chats or banking apps in the corner. Turn on Do Not Disturb before recording and check each frame.

If you realise something sensitive went out, delete or edit the video quickly, change any related passwords, and watch for unusual login alerts.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to post my birthday on TikTok?

Celebrating is fine, but avoid showing your full date of birth with the year, since it is often used to confirm identity. Keep the birthday field on your account private where possible.

What should I do if I posted my ID by mistake?

Delete the post straight away, check for reposts, and contact the organisation that issued the document if you think it could be misused. Watch your accounts for unusual activity.
