Why notifications wear you down
Each alert is a small interruption that asks you to switch attention, even if you do not open it. Over a day, dozens of these can leave you feeling scattered and tired without knowing why.
Many notifications are not about people at all. They are suggestions, trending clips or reminders designed to bring you back into the app.
1. Keep only what involves real people
Open TikTok's settings and find the notifications section. Consider keeping direct messages and perhaps comments from people you know, and turning off suggested videos, live alerts and other recommendations.
Ask one question for each type: would I be upset if I missed this? If the honest answer is no, switch it off.
2. Use your phone's controls too
Your phone settings can override any app. On both iPhone and Android you can turn off sounds and lock-screen banners for an app while still seeing a badge when you choose to look.
Removing the red badge count can help as well, because that little number is designed to make you curious.
3. Batch the rest
Some phones offer a scheduled summary that groups non-urgent alerts and delivers them at set times, such as noon and 6 pm. That way you check once instead of fifty times.
If your phone does not have this feature, simply decide on two or three check-in times a day and leave the app closed in between.
4 and 5. Focus modes and a monthly review
Focus or Do Not Disturb modes let you silence everything except chosen contacts during study, work or sleep. Set them to turn on automatically so you do not have to remember.
Apps add new notification types over time and updates can change settings, so take two minutes each month to check that your choices are still in place.
Frequently asked questions
Will I miss important messages if I turn off notifications?
Not if you keep alerts for direct messages or allow key contacts through focus modes. Most of what you switch off will be suggestions and promotions, not people.
Why do new notification types keep appearing?
Apps add features and sometimes new alert categories with updates. A quick monthly check of your notification settings keeps things under control.
