How should creators archive their own TikToks?

Archive your own TikToks by keeping your original files, requesting your account data in TikTok's privacy settings, and saving each video with its caption, date and results. Store it all in dated folders outside the app, so your portfolio survives a lost phone or a closed account.

Why the app is not an archive

Your profile feels permanent, but it is not a backup. Posts can be removed, accounts can be restricted, and phones get lost, and in each case the only copy may vanish with it.

A personal archive also makes you more employable. When a brand asks for examples of your work, you can send a tidy folder or reel instead of hoping old posts are still up.

Keep the originals from day one

The best copy of a video is the raw footage and the final edit you exported before posting. Get into the habit of saving the final export into a folder named by month, for example 2026-10, before you hit Post.

If you edit inside TikTok, save your finished video to your device before or after posting where the app offers that option. Settings and options change, so check what your version of the app allows.

Request your account data

TikTok lets you request a copy of your data from the privacy section of your settings. The export can include information such as your posts list, comments and profile details, though what it contains can change.

Request it a few times a year and keep each export with a date in its folder name. Check the current steps in the app or TikTok's help centre, as the menu names move between updates.

Build a portfolio folder

Next to the full archive, keep a small 'best of' folder with your top 10 to 20 videos and a one-page note listing what each one achieved. Update it every quarter.

Add context a stranger would need: the date, the goal of the video, the caption and any results you are allowed to share. That folder becomes your media kit without extra work later.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TikTok data export the same as a video backup?

Not always. The export is useful for records, but it may not include every video file in the quality you want, so keep your own original files as well.

How often should I update my archive?

A monthly routine works for most creators: move that month's final edits into the archive and note the results. Request a fresh account data export every few months.
