Gather everything in one place
Family clips end up scattered across phones, chat apps and old accounts. Pick one main folder on a computer or cloud account and collect your own recordings there.
Ask relatives to send the originals of videos they filmed rather than forwarded copies, which are often lower quality. Videos you posted to TikTok yourself can be saved from your own originals or account data.
Name and describe each video
Rename files with the date first, then the event, for example 2026-08-17-independence-day-street-games. Dates at the start make everything sort in order automatically.
Keep a simple list or caption with who is in each video. In twenty years, nobody will remember which cousin is which unless someone wrote it down.
Keep at least two copies
Store one copy in cloud storage and another on an external drive kept in a different room or home. One copy on one phone is the riskiest place your memories can live.
Check once a year that the videos still open and that the backups are up to date. Move them to newer storage when your drives get old.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest place to store family videos?
No single place is perfectly safe, which is why two or more copies matter. A mix of cloud storage and an offline drive covers most risks.
Should I keep blurry or short clips?
Keep anything that captures a person or moment you would miss. You can make a separate favourites album so the best clips are easy to find.
